SR 5/US 1 at Aviation Boulevard PD&E Study

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has completed the Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study for State Road (SR) 5/US 1 at Aviation Boulevard in Indian River County.

On December 6, 2024 the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), pursuant to 23 U.S.C. §327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated May 26, 2022, and executed by the FHWA and FDOT, was granted Location and Design Concept Acceptance for the SR 5/US 1 at Aviation Boulevard PD&E Study in the City of Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida.

The proposed improvements consist of improving safety, addressing existing and projected traffic demands, and enhancing the multi-modal features for the pedestrian, bicycle and transit users.

The Preferred Alternative that benefits the community, enhances safety, provides multi-modal improvements, and meets future traffic needs for this study was presented at the public hearing on June 18th and 20th, 2024. The Preferred Alternative reconstructs the US 1 and Aviation Boulevard intersection with additional turn lanes, raised medians, transit stops, sidewalks, shared use paths, stormwater systems, signage and street lighting. The SR 5/US 1 Main Canal bridge will be reconstructed and will include a shared use path.

This project is now eligible to proceed to the next phase of development.
