ABOUT:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is currently conducting a PD&E Study along Jenkins Road from CR-712/Midway Road to SR-68/Orange Avenue. A PD&E Study is FDOT’s process to evaluate the social, economic, and environmental impacts associated with a planned transportation improvement project. The purpose of this project is to promote system linkage, support transportation demand, and enhance multimodal connectivity within the area along South Jenkins Road. System linkage includes filling the roadway gaps along Jenkins Road. Multimodal improvements include adding sidewalks, shared use paths, and bike lanes to increase the safety of the local community.

PURPOSE AND NEED:

The Purpose and Need of the PD&E Study for Jenkins Road from CR-712/Midway Road to SR-68/Orange Avenue in St. Lucie County, Florida is to promote system linkage, support transportation demand, and enhance multimodal connectivity in the area along South Jenkins Road. This project involves widening the existing South Jenkins Road from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway from Altman Road to Orange Avenue, Walmart Distribution Center to Glades Cut-Off Road, and Midway Road to Post Office Road. The businesses and residential communities along Jenkins Road traveling between Midway Road to SR 70 and SR 68 is accomplished along parallel facilities like I-95. This project will improve connectivity with a new four-lane roadway to connect between the existing Jenkins Road from Post Office Road to Glades Cut-Off Road and Walmart Distribution Center to Altman Road. As there are only sidewalks in a few locations along Jenkins Road, and only bicycle lanes in one section along Jenkins Road, this project will also include multimodal considerations such as sidewalks and bicycle lanes. Therefore, the typical section may include four travel lanes, a median, dedicated bicycle lanes, and either a sidewalk or shared-use path.
