Incident Response Vehicle Pilot Project (Smart Work Zone)
The FDOT District Six Road Ranger Service Patrol vehicles and the Incident Response Vehicles (IRV) fleet are equipped with cellular transponders. These transponders synchronize with vehicle light bars, automatically dispatching digital alerts to commonly used third-party navigation systems whenever the lights are activated. With these digital alerts in place, drivers can proactively plan their routes and navigate away from incident scenes, promoting smoother traffic flow and enhancing safety measures.
This system offers numerous benefits for both road users and emergency responders, including the following features:
- Sending digital alerts to third-party navigation systems when emergency vehicles activate their lights.
- Streamlining infrastructure deployment.
- Utilizing GPS and cellular communications to disseminate real-time data and improve traffic incident management.
- Promoting awareness of traffic incidents and hazards by informing drivers of potential downstream merging conditions.
- Leveraging the use of existing traveler information dissemination platforms and applications.
