Intersection Collision Avoidance Safety Program (iCASP)

The City of Lakeland’s City Commission, has for over a year, been committed to the development of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV) for the benefit of its citizens, visitors, and freight operations.  This project will permanently implement Intersection Collision Avoidance Safety Program (iCASP) at 25 locations within Lakeland. This project is a vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) connected vehicle project that will use existing types of detection and communication for connected vehicles to improve intersection safety.  The project consists of 3 major components, not including the existing signalized infrastructure: 1) Sensors to detect approaching vehicles; 2) Roadway infrastructure to warn vehicles at a signalized intersection (deployed at 13 locations in this project, and 6 intersections in a separate project); and 3) In-vehicle driver warning system (alerts available to travelers with a connected vehicle on-board unit).

Project deployment is expected to be complete in Summer 2025.  Elements have already been deployed and are operational as of Summer 2024.
