I-4 Active Work Zone

As part of the Vital Few Action Plan, District One supported the implementation of Active Work Zone elements within an I-4 resurfacing project from CR 557 to the Polk/Osceola County Line.  Two elements were incorporated into this project:

  1. Queue Detection and Warning System – this system detected queues as they developed in the approach to the work zone and provided advanced warning to the motorist to slow traffic as they approached the back of queue.
  2. Dynamic Lane Merge System – this system helped create more orderly merging conditions by communicating to drivers through message boards or vehicle on-board units.  The messages advised to merge early or late, depending on traffic characteristics.

This project helped design and construction staff understand the suitability of this approach, and level of effort required to implement it.
