GPS Seed File Creation
The ITSFM GPS Seed File training teaches students best practices for creating new seed files that included the latest version of the data dictionary, local road names and the mile marker locations at 1/10th mile intervals to support efficient GPS data collection in the field.
Class Duration
- Two days.
Prerequisites
- Previous civil, outside plant telecommunication, surveying or GPS mapping experience.
- Intermediate-level computer experience.
- Must have a backlog of at least one roadway corridor available for the creation of new GPS seed files.
Hardware/Software/Material Requirements
- GPS mapping vehicle equipped with calibrated electronic distance measuring equipment and safety lights.
- Trimble Geo7x data collector capable of sub-meter accuracy and equipped with TerraSync 5.85 or newer and external mount antenna.
- Laptop computer equipped with Microsoft Mobile Device Center.
- Licensed Trimble Pathfinder Office.
Syllabus
Module 1 – Introduction and task overview
Module 2 – Planning Seed Files:
- Use FDOT’s straight-line diagrams (SLD) to determine route layout
- Start/stop points
- Required mile marker frequency
- Create route maps defining the work
- Get District approval for the route layout
- Request data dictionary updates from Central Office
Module 3 – Schedule and Coordination:
- Prepare time estimate.
- Schedule Equipment:
- GPS Data Collector and Software.
- GPS mapping vehicle.
- Shadow vehicle for maintenance of traffic and two-way radios if required.
Module 4 – DMI Accuracy and Setup
