Motorcycle Safety
Motorcycle Safety
Florida’s sunny weather, beautiful beaches, and scenic highways make it a popular place for motorcycle enthusiasts. The State also hosts popular motorcycle rallies such as Biketoberfest® and Daytona Bike Week. Florida’s growing population and popularity with motorcycle enthusiasts make motorcycle safety an important issue.
Florida continually Ranks in the top three states in the nation for motorcycle related fatalities.
To combat Motorcycle crashes, our efforts focus on :
Enforcement: Enforcing Traffic laws regarding motorcyclists and motor vehicles engaging motorcycles.
Communication Program: Public awareness and education regarding Motorcycle safety.
Education: the Citizens Motorcycle Course - S.M.A.R.T. You can find more training and educational information here: https://ridesmartflorida.com/
Programs receiving grant funding in this priority area are focused on three major program related categories:
- Problem Identification: Data collection and analysis to identify and develop countermeasures and awareness initiatives that lead to appropriate modifications in driver behavior.
- Communication programs to ensure motorist watch for motorcyclists and to enhance compliance of traffic laws involving Motorcyclists.
- Enforcement Countermeasures: Enforcement to strategically address unsafe driving behavior of motorcyclists, proper licensing and other motorists who show a lack of awareness to a motorcyclist (violation right of way, etc.)
Items eligible for funding under this category using (402 funds) may include overtime Enforcement, equipment, and public awareness materials.
All program areas funded with grant funds are required to have an evaluation method that will allow assessment of the funded program's level of success in reducing fatalities and injuries. For more information, see our Grants page.
Enforcement
Motorcycle violations are taken very seriously and the goal is to save lives. Law Enforcement agencies are expected to enforce traffic laws and have strict enforcement for improper licensing (no motorcycle endorsement).
Motorcycle Safety Grants
Section 405(f) of GHSA encourages States to adopt and implement effective programs to reduce the number of single-and multi-vehicle crashes involving motorcyclists.
