The two winners were Alpha SafeNet (won with their product, Alpha Overwatch) and SmartCone USA (won with their product, SmartCone RoadDefender).
Both products are work zone intrusion detection technology systems used to alert work zone workers of errant vehicles and threats while working in a work zone. The technology systems use a combination of devices, such as LiDAR, radar, cameras, AI, weather stations, alert speakers, wearable alert speakers, wearable smart watches, and work with advanced traffic control devices (cones, barrels, signage, etc.), to alert the workers so they have time to seek safety prior to a collision.
FDOT rolled out a developmental specification to fast track the implementation of these two safety products. They are scheduled to be used on all interstate paving projects in 2025.
“The wins were twofold,” ACAF President Amy Miller said. “Not only did these companies secure a path toward implementation with FDOT, but they also had the opportunity to present their innovations in front of industry leaders. That exposure led to new collaborations that are already making work zones safer.”
One of the most unexpected yet valuable outcomes of the SWIFTT Challenge has been the collaboration it fosters. "It’s not just about winning," Miller said. "Participants are presenting in front of an audience of industry professionals who can offer insights, suggest improvements, or even form partnerships on the spot. Some of the best ideas come from these side conversations."
"Our goal is to provide awareness and information to workers in real time," Jason Lee, CEO and Founder of SmartCone said. "Even a few extra seconds of reaction time can mean the difference between life and death."
