Safe Mobility for Life Program
Safe Mobility for Life Program Goal

Program Overview

During their lifetime, a person will spend thousands of hours driving, walking, biking, or riding. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is ensuring that each of those trips - whether in a car, on a bus, bicycle, motorcycle, or by foot - is as safe as possible, particularly for Florida's growing aging population.

Florida leads the nation with over 22 percent of our population aged 65 or older, and it is projected to rise to 26 percent by 2045. FDOT established the Safe Mobility for Life Program in the State Traffic Engineering and Operations Office to address the transportation needs of aging Floridians, as changes to health, vision, and reflexes can affect driving as early as age 55. While Safe Mobility for Life focuses on Florida's aging population, it has the added benefit of improving transportation safety for all residents and visitors.

In 2009, FDOT partnered with Florida State University's Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy to form a statewide coalition. Working together, with over 30 coalition member organizations from a wide range of sectors, Safe Mobility for Life is dedicated to eliminating fatalities for Florida's aging population while maintaining their safe connection to the community.

Safe Mobility for Life implements a proactive, research-based, data-driven approach to develop resources designed to support Florida's older adults in maintaining their safe mobility and independence, beyond the driver's seat.
