Roadside Unit Health Monitoring System

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has and continues to deploy connected vehicle (CV) technology across the state to inspire innovation. The FDOT identified the need to provide continuous monitoring of the health and status of all roadside units (RSUs) deployed within Florida to support operations and maintenance of this equipment.

In June 2022, the FDOT procured a turnkey statewide Roadside Unit Health Monitoring System (RSU HMS) platform for a 3-year service period. The selected provider, Kyra Solutions, Inc., is providing all the hardware, software, labor, and all other elements necessary for the statewide RSU HMS platform.

In July 2023, FDOT went live with the RSU HMS powered by Kyra’s IntelliConnect platform. The system also interfaces with FDOT’s Security Credential Management System (SCMS) to provide the security certificate needed for each unit and monitors for their compliance. The platform also interfaces the Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) Data Exchange Platform to send roadside unit data. Kyra continues to provide FDOT with ongoing integration and engineering support.

Using the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) RSU Specification v4.1 or Simple Network Management Protocol version 3 (SNMPv3) to communicate with the RSUs, the RSU HMS can report on such things such as global status, detailed status, certificate status, and provide a status change log to support engineers, technicians, and operators keep RSUs resilient so that RSUs can communicate signal phase and timing information as well as Traveler Information Messages (TIMs) to road users to improve safety and enhance mobility.
