SR 29 Advanced Wildlife Warning System

This project will deploy equipment to detect animals (especially the endangered Florida panther) within a nearly two-mile segment of SR 29 south of Immokalee in Collier County.  Detection equipment includes thermal cameras, radar detection, and video cameras for confirmation.  When animals are detected, flashing beacons on signs within the detection zone will be activated to alert drivers that wildlife are present and to drive with caution.

In addition to the flashing beacons, a Connected Vehicle Roadside Unit will be deployed to broadcast the alerts to travelers equipped with On-Board Units (OBUs).  This will provide an in-vehicle alert for the length of the corridor.

Deployment of this project is expected in fall 2024.
