Florida Department of Transportation Recognizes the Essential Role of Florida’s Crossing Guards and Announces Annual Crossing Guard of the Year Awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is joining local communities across the state to celebrate the crucial role of Florida's school crossing guards in enhancing community safety and protecting the state’s schoolchildren and families. In a proclamation signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, February 7, 2025, has been officially designated as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Florida, acknowledging the selfless dedication and efforts of these individuals every school day.

“Each school day, Florida’s school crossing guards help ensure the safety of some of our communities’ smallest road users and their families through their unwavering commitment to public safety and education of responsible pedestrian behaviors,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E. “On School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to these community heroes who selflessly volunteer their time to keep our schoolchildren safe.”

For the past 15 years, the first Friday of February has provided Floridians with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the admirable services provided by thousands of school crossing guards throughout the state. In addition to community recognition, FDOT annually highlights their dedication and professionalism through the School Crossing Guard Awards. This year, FDOT is proud to announce the following individuals as the 2024 award recipients who have been chosen for their exceptional service:

2024 Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year

  • Douglas McIntyre, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office | “Douglas, affectionately known as "Mr. Doug," is highly cherished by the entire community. The children and parents alike look forward to seeing him each day. For many, he is the highlight of their morning. His kindness, dedication, and positive demeanor have earned him the respect and admiration of everyone he encounters. He truly embodies what it means to be a valued member of the community.”

2024 Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year - Extra Mile Award

She often offers words of encouragement and advice, fostering a sense of safety and security among the children. Her commitment to her role enhances the overall professionalism of the agency and contributes to a safer school environment.”

To further demonstrate its steadfast commitment to public safety and education, Florida continues to take a leading role in developing and implementing robust school crossing guard training guidelines that position these guards to safely and effectively operate guarded school crossings across the state. The Ramon Turnquest School Crossing Guard Act mandates comprehensive training for all guards, ensuring consistency and effectiveness in safeguarding our schoolchildren. FDOT, in collaboration with local law enforcement and partners, actively works towards enhancing the skills and capabilities of these vital community members.
